In 1777, Ambrose Bull, Sr. married Elizabeth (Bute) Johnson in Newbern, Craven, North Carolina. The marriage ceremony was performed by a Justice of the Peace.

They had the following children:
  - Janet Bull (1778 - 1878)
  - James Hogan Bull (Born June 23, 1780 in Newbern, Craven, North Carolina - Died August 25, 1840 in Yazoo City, Yazoo, Mississippi)
  - Robert Bull (Born 1782 in Newbern, Craven, North Carolina - Died August 12, 1861 in Ashley, Arkansas)
  - Susannah Bull (Born 1786 in Craven, North Carolina - 1887)
  - Letitia Bull (1788 - )

Around March, 1779, Ambrose Bull, Sr. volunteered to serve in the Colonial Army as a private soldier. His company was under command of Captain (David or Charles) Roach. His term was six months.
