On August 26, 1852, Sophia Mitchell (age 18) married [[anderson_smith_randal|Anderson Smith Randal]] (age 19) in Lavonia, Georgia (Franklin County, Georgia).((http://genealogytrails.com/geo/franklin/marriages1849-1852.html))

It is important to note the minor discrepancies between Wiley Mitchell's 1850 and 1860 United States Federal Census, because the majority of discrepancies appear to be corrections.

The most interesting discrepancy is that in the 1860 United States Federal Census, Martha Mitchell had changed her birthplace from Georgia to Virginia. Other differences are:
  * "Nancy Mitchell" now reports her age as 28 (when it should be either 29 or 30),
  * "[[elisha_w_mitchell|Elisha Mitchell]]" is now identified as "Eli W. Mitchell",
  * "Sarah Mitchell" is now identified as "Sallie Mitchell" (which explains why Anderson Randal and Sophia Mitchell named their seventh child "Sallie"), and
  * "Rolen Mitchell" is now identified as "Roland Mitchell" (which explains why Anderson Randal and Sophia Mitchell named their sixth child "Roland").


Shortly after the beginning of the “War of Northern Aggression”, Sophia's brother, [[elisha_w_mitchell|Elisha (Eli) W. Mitchell]] (sometimes appearing as Mitchael) volunteered to serve in the Confederate 34th Infantry Regiment, Co. G. He was joined by his Brother-in-law (Sophia's husband), [[anderson_smith_randal|Anderson Smith Randal]]. 

Initially a Private, Elisha W. Mitchell was soon promoted to 1st Corporal. Elisha W. Mitchell was first captured at Champion Hill, Mississippi, on May 16, 1863, and was captured again at Vicksburg, Mississippi, on July 4, 1863. Elisha W. Consistent with the 1860 United States Federal Census, Martha Mitchell reports her birthplace as Virginia. However, Nancy Mitchells age is recorded as 30 (when it should be 39). This was likely an error by the census taker.

Sophia Mitchell Randal died on July 20, 1900 in Hart County, Georgia.
