Jesse Adams
Son of unknown parents, Jesse Adams was born during 1812 in Virginia. (it is sometimes mistakenly assumed “John M. Adams” was his father, but “John M. Adams” lived in South Carolina… not Virginia)
On Sept. 24, 1835, Jesse Adams married Lettice Christian Collier (age 18) in Franklin County, Georgia.1)
Lettice Christian Collier (born June 2, 1817 - died Feb. 12, 1917) is “believed” to have been the daughter of Thomas Collier (born September 23, 1784 in South Carolina - died May 24, 1855 in Franklin Co., GA) and Mary Collins (born sometime between 1792 and 1795 in South Carolina - died Aug. 4, 1872). However, I've not found any direct evidence to support this. Collier sometimes appears as “Collyer”.
They had the following children:
- Franklin Epp Adams (born Abt. 1836 in Carnesville (Franklin County), Georgia - died May 16, 1863 in Vicksburg (Warren County), Mississippi). Married to Mary Elizabeth Brown (born May 13, 1842 in Franklin County, Georgia - died Oct. 23, 1910 in Stephens County Georgia).2)
- John W. Adams (born July 12, 1837 in Franklin County, Georgia - died June 19, 1883 in Rusk (Cherokee County), Texas. Married to Catherine Elizabeth Kay (born October, 1836 in Anderson (Anderson County), South Carolina - died October 18, 1912 in Iola (Grimes County), Texas).3)
- Mead Anderson Adams (1839 - 1902)
- Lucy A. Adams (born 1841 in Franklin County, Georgia - died in 1870 living in Franklin County, Georgia w/mother).4)
- William L. Adams (born during 1844 in Carnesville (Franklin County), Georgia - ).5)
- Sarah Elizabeth “Sally” Adams (born Jan. 19, 1854 in Franklin County, Georgia - died Dec. 8, 1933 in Gumlog (Franklin County), Georgia). Married Rev. Henry Farmer Stovall Jr. (born Aug. 19, 1854 in Franklin County, Georgia - died June 30, 1931 in Gumlog (Franklin County), Georgia).
- Stacy Annice Adams (born 1857 in Carnesville (Franklin County), Georgia - ).
- Thomas (may not have been a natural son - but perhaps an adopted orphan)

1880 United States Federal Census
State: Georgia
County: Franklin
Township or other Division of County: Gum Log Dist.
Date: June 19, 1880
Name | Relation | Gender | Age | Birthplace | Occupation |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Christian Adams | Head | F | 62 | Virginia | Housekeeper |
Nancy A. Adams | Daughter | F | 18 | Georgia | In School |
Thomas Clark | Servant | M | 17 | Georgia | Works on Farm |
Note: It is curious that while Thomas was listed as an “Adams” in the 1870 Census, he was listed as a “Clark” in the 1880 Census. Also curious is that, while the 1870 Census did not list “relationship” (e.g., son, daughter), this was included in the 1880 Census… and Thomas was identified as a “Servant” rather than a “Son”. Was this Jesse Thomas Jackson Clark?
