Jesse Thomas Jackson Clarke
Believed to be the son of Jackson Clarke (born in 1823 in North Carolina) - mother's name unknown (but born in Virginia - according to Jesse Thomas Jackson Clark's 1920 U.S. Census), Jesse Thomas Jackson Clarke, known to friends and family as “Tom”, was born on March 15, 1863, in Franklin County, Georgia.
When examining the 1880 U.S. Census, we find a curious circumstance of there being two individuals named Thomas Clark, of the same race and age, living in Gum Log Georgia. In one, we find that Jesse T.J. Clarke (age 17) was an orphan; living with Henry Stoval, Jr. & his wife Sarah E. Stovall, where he worked on a farm. In this entry his mother is listed as having been born in VA. In the 1870 U.S. Census, Henry Stoval, Jr. was not married and still living with his father, Henry F. Stoval, Sr. There is no mention of Thomas Clark in that census record.
In the second, we see Thomas Clarke (age 17) living with a 62 year old woman named Christian Adams; and her 18 year old daughter named Nancy A. Adams. This becomes more interesting when we see that the neighbor of Christian Adams is Mead Anderson Adams (her son)1). Mead Anderson Adams had served in the Confederate 24th Georgia Infantry (perhaps with Jesse T.J. Clark's father). A few years later, Jesse T.J. Clark will marry Christian Adams's granddaughter (Mead's daughter), Sallie Tallulah Adams. In this entry his mother is listed as having been born in GA.
So the question is whether these are two different individuals, or the same. If they are different, then which one is our ancestor. Examining U.S. Census records through the following years we see the same inconsistency with whether his mother was born in VA or GA. And in 1910 he even lists his father as having been born in VA.
