Susan “Susie” Jane Randall

Daughter of Anderson Smith Randal and Sophia Mitchell, Susan “Susie” Jane Randall was born April 6, 1862 in Franklin County, Georgia.

Susan “Susie” Jane Randall was likely named in honor of her Aunt (Anderson's sister), Susanna(h) Jane Randal. It is also likely that her Aunt Susanna(h) Jane Randal-Mitchell was present during most of her early years; especially since Susanna(h) Jane Randal-Mitchell had married Susie's Uncle (Sophia's brother), Elisha "Eli" W. Mitchell. Clearly, these two families would have been very close.

According to the 1870 U.S. Census, her grandmother, Martha Mitchell lived only two houses away from her. Considering that Martha lived until 1889, it is highly likely that “Susie” grew up with the presence of her grandmother.

Susie's father, Anderson Smith Randal, died on December 1, 1875, when she was only 13 years old.

On Nov. 28, 1882, “Susie” (age 20) married Jeremiah Gose (Jerry) Madden (age 29). Jerry Madden was the son of Robert Asbury Madden1) and Melissa J. Madden,2) who lived in the Reed Creek District (Hart County), Georgia.3)

[Susie Jane Randall - In her youth.][Jeremiah Gose (Jerry) Madden - In his youth.]

“Susie” and Jeremiah Gose (Jerry) Madden had the following children:

  1. Arthur Wiley Madden (Born June 27, 1884 in Lavonia (Franklin County) Georgia - May 20, 1916 in Alexandria (Rapides County) Louisiana)4)
  2. Frely May (sometimes appearing as “Mae” or “Mary”) Madden Cherry (Born Oct. 6, 1885 in Lavonia (Franklin County), Georgia - Died Aug. 14, 1970 in El Campo, TX Frely May Cherry - Death Certificate)5)6) She married Theodore Franklin “Dode” Cherry.7)
  3. Annie M. Madden (Born March 11, 1887 - Died 1916)8)
  4. Myrtle Mannie Madden-Jackson (Born Nov. 6, 1888 in Georgia - Died Dec. 10, 1938 in Bridgeport (Wise County), Texas)9) Myrtle her sister Byrtie were twins.10) Myrtle married John W. Jackson.11)
  5. Byrtie Vada (Madden) Roark Taylor (Born November 6, 1888 in Lavonia, Georgia - Died January 11, 1978 in Dallas, Texas)12)13)
  6. Nancy Blanche (Madden) Braesicke (Born October 6, 1890 in Lavonia (Franklin County), Georgia - Unknown)14)15) She married Cuno Edwald Braesicke (May 23, 1889 - March 26, 1957)16)
  7. Bessie (Madden) Rogers (Born June 16, 1892 in Lavonia (Franklin County), Georgia - 1982 in Decatur, Wise County, Texas)17)18)
  8. Lois Madden Batdorff Keith (Born February 11, 1894 in Lavonia (Franklin County), Georgia - Died April 20, 1967 in Wise County, Texas)19)20)
  9. Bela May (Madden) Carroll (Born April 3, 1896 in Texas - Nov. 12, 1978 in Fort Worth (Tarrant County), Texas)21)22) She married Major Earl Carroll (Born Jan. 4, 1889 in Clyde (Washington County), Arkansas - Died Nov. 12, 1966 in Fort Worth (Tarrant County), Texas).23)
  10. Henry Otto Madden, Sr. (Born June 13, 1898 in Red River, Texas - Died March 11, 1942 in VA Hospital, Kerriville Texas )24)25)
Most of the original 1890 U.S. Federal Census records were destroyed or badly damaged by a fire in the Commerce Department in 1921. Records enumerating only 6,160 individuals—less than one percent of the schedules—survived. Those for the Madden family were destroyed.

[Wise County, Texas.] Some time between 1894 and 1898, “Susie” and Jeremiah Gose (Jerry) Madden moved their family to Texas (there are inconsistencies between the 1900 & 1910 U.S. Census as to whether Bela May was born in Georgia or Texas). By June of 1900 they had settled in the city of Greenwood, Texas (in Wise County). The population of Wise County, Texas in 1900 was 27,116.26)

[1900 U.S. Census. Jeremiah Gose (Jerry) Madden's family begins on line 9. Here the census taker recorded his name as "George".]

Note: Various types of errors on census forms were, and remain, common. For example, it is possible that Jeremiah “Gose” Madden was called “George” at that time. Also, several of the children's names were spelled as they “sounded” to the census taker. Despite all of this, the above census record is clearly that of our ancestor.

[The Madden house. Photo taken during 1991.] About 10 years after having moved their family to Texas, Jeremiah Gose (Jerry) Madden died on Aug. 26, 1906.27)

At some point between the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Census, Jeremiah Gose (Jerry) Madden's older brother, Labourn Hamilton Madden and his wife Mary Elizabeth Griffin Randall Madden (the widow of Elisha Burrell Randall, and mother of Thomas Doomous (Dumas) Randall), moved much of their family to Childress County, Texas. It is not known whether they arrived before or after the death of Jeremiah Gose (Jerry) Madden.

After Jerry died, Sue Jane, as an active member of the Decatur First Baptist Church (located just down the street from her small home), ran a boarding house for men studying at the Decatur Baptist Seminary. The boarders slept in the an attic room. She also served family style lunches for 5 cents during the 1910's, 20's and 30's.

The 1900 U.S. Census indicated that Susie had 10 children, all of whom were living. In the 1910 U.S. Census (after the death of Jeremiah Gose (Jerry) Madden - who died on Aug. 26, 1906) she indicates that she had 12 children, 10 of which were still living. From this we can surmise that between 1900 and 1906 she had two children who had died.

The 1910 U.S. Census showed their oldest son, Arthur Wiley Madden, living with his Brother-in-law, Dud Roark, Byrtie Vada Madden-Roark, and their two daughters, L. Pauline Roark & Susie M. Roark, in Petrolia (Clay County), Texas. Almost 10 years after the death of Jeremiah Gose (Jerry) Madden, on May 20, 1916, Arthur Wiley Madden (age 32), drowned in an oil rig accident in Alexandria (Rapides County) Louisiana).28)29) His “Record of Funeral” (shown below) listed him as “Single” (never having been married).

Death of Susan "Susie" Jane Randall-Madden

A short time before her 81st birthday, Susie died on March 28, 1943 at her home in Decatur (Wise County), Texas, from heart disease. [Susan Jane Randall Madden "Death Certificate". Cause of death, heart disease. Note that the death certificate incorrectly spells Anderson's last name as "Randell" and Sophia's maiden name is incorrectly listed as "Hunter" (was actually Mitchell).
The death certificate was completed from information provided by Susie's daughter, Lois. It is likely that Lois made these errors because she never met Anderson (he died before she was born) and Sophia died when Lois was only 6 years old (in 1900). Also, since "Susie" and Jeremiah Gose (Jerry) Madden moved their family to Texas sometime prior to April 1896, Lois would not have grown up around her grandmother (Sophia).]

Susie Jane Randall-Madden was beside her husband, J.C. Madden, at Oaklawn Cemetery (Plot: 2866, 5, 6, 32)30), Decatur (Wise County), Texas
