Son of Joseph Maret and Sarah Ann Holland-Maret, Joseph William (or Wilburn) Maret was born on March 14, 1859 in Hart County, Georgia.

Joseph W. Maret married Adela R. Walters. Adela R. Walters (born June 12, 1863 in Hart County, Georgia) was the daughter of unknown parents.

They had the following children:

Sarah Petula "Pet" Maret Cawthon (b. July 14, 1881 in Hart County, Georgia - d. Oct. 17, 1973 in Toccoa (Stephens County), Georgia).¹⁾ She married Wade Hampton “Hamp” Cawthon.²⁾
